US Application Essay Workshops

UES will be hosting a series of essay workshops this summer, giving students a head start on their Common App, University of California, and Supplementary Essays.

As we near the time of year when the Common Application and University of California portals open for 2017, it's vital to start planning ahead in terms of college applications.

Key to a successful application are college essays. All students applying through the Common Application need to write the Common Application essay (650 words), and those applying to a college in the University of California (such as UCLA or Berkeley) need to respond to four Personal Insight questions (350 words each). Most colleges also require between one and three supplementary essays specific to that college. So if you were looking to apply to nine colleges in the US, the essay workload could easily exceed twenty!

One common mistake that students make is underestimating the time involved - if you leave all of the essays until the week before the deadline, it's very difficult to put together a thoughtful response. With so many essays to write, it's important that students plan well in advance and set aside the time to work on the essays properly. Another common pitfall for students is basing their responses on the style of the UCAS statement. US college essays are much more personal and reflective in tone than the British equivalent, and it's important to get this difference right.

This summer, we will be offering a series of workshops to help students kick-start their application essays and get ahead of the game. The workshops will have a structured first hour that takes students through the format, content, and style required of these essays, followed by two hours of supervised work where they can get expert advice from one of our essay tutors. Throughout the summer and autumn we will also be offering personalised one-to-one sessions to get in-depth feedback and put the finishing touches on students' essay drafts, which we would recommend in conjunction with the workshops.

The dates of the workshops are:
  • Wednesday 12th July
  • Wednesday 19th July
  • Wednesday 26th July
  • Wednesday 2nd August
  • Wednesday 9th August
  • Wednesday 16th August
  • Wednesday 23rd August
  • Wednesday 30th August
